Choirs

Under the leadership of Mr. Scott Hanoian, Director of Music and Organist, the Christ Church choirs continue a long tradition of excellence in sacred music.  Among the finest Anglican choirs within the United States today, the choirs of Christ Church sing at over 100 choral services each year, regularly offering their voice to our collective prayer and praise. With a remarkable annual repertoire of over 250 anthems and motets, the Christ Church Choirs offer a beauty and depth to our worship that is unique not only in Grosse Pointe, but through the metropolitan Detroit area.

In addition to our commitment to offer music at the highest standard for the praise of God, the Christ Church choir program seeks to provide excellence in musical education for choir members, including music theory and performance, while supporting the overall development, spiritual and personal, of each chorister.

Our Heritage

The Choir of Men and Boys was founded in 1930 by Beecher Aldrich and continues to lead the congregation in liturgy typically at the 11:15 am service on Sunday. In 1955, Robert Hawksley organized the Choir of Men and Girls to provide music leadership for the 9:15 am service on Sunday. Since the inception of both choirs, music has been an integral part of the life of the Christ Church parish. In 2009, Christ Church introduced the Schola as an advanced choir to compliment the fine tradition of the Choirs of Men and Boys and Men and Girls and to expand the repertoire of sacred music offered at Christ Church.

Commitment and Benefits

The Christ Church Choirs strive for musical excellence through significant music offerings including challenging works by master composers, training in vocal technique, skill development in music reading, the inspiration and joy of shared musical expression, and the fulfillment that comes from public performances.

The rigorous and intensive choral training offered by the Christ Church Music Program is unique, and requires a deep commitment by choristers and their families. At Christ Church, choristers pursue a professional level course of musical training and play an important role in the life of both the Church and the Grosse Pointe community. In order to achieve the desired excellence in worship and formation, Choristers rehearse three times per week and the choirs are responsible for leading worship for Sunday morning and afternoon services and presenting concerts throughout the season.

The benefits of such a rigorous program, however, extend well beyond the beauty of worship and song. Being a part of a church choir during an individual’s formative years builds reliable musical habits, encourages spiritual growth, and teaches the discipline necessary to function efficiently in a group. The values of confidence, dependability, self-esteem, responsibility, stamina, courage, cooperation, self-discipline, and self-reliance are instilled in each of the choristers from rehearsal to service. The hard work of each chorister contributes to the enhancement of the life of the parish, the community, and beyond. Their training has provided a number of choristers with the foundation to continue their musical education and occasionally pursue musical careers.

Choir Tours

Each year, one of our choirs tour nationally and internationally. These tours provide our choristers opportunities to build and deepen friendship, celebrate the excellence and success of their work throughout the past year, expand their horizons as they experience new communities and cultures, and deepen their experience and understanding of the spiritual lives. Past tours have included England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Italy, Spain, and Australia.

Choral Stipend

Depending on the level a chorister has achieved (as signified by a ribbon), each chorister is paid modestly for their involvement in the Christ Church Choirs on a “per-service” basis. A “service” includes a rehearsal or a service with its corresponding rehearsal. Choristers are also paid to participate in weddings and funerals when a choir has been requested.

Comprehensive Music Education

In addition to the training received in rehearsals, each chorister is provided music theory instruction and has the opportunity to study individual voice with professional musicians from the greater Detroit area. Voice lessons are invaluable not only from the point of view of developing technique, but also for managing the substantial work load placed upon young voices.

Private Voice Lessons

In addition to lessons and training provided within the choral program, choristers may also elect to participate in private voice lessons offered through Christ Church.  Approved vocal instructors who are familiar with the choral expectations and training provided at Christ Church, and known to choristers themselves, are availabe for private lessons throughout the week.

Life Experience

The Christ Church Choirs strive for musical excellence through significant music offerings including challenging works by master composers, training in vocal technique, skill development in music reading, the inspiration and joy of shared musical expression, and the fulfillment that comes from public performances.

These same experiences foster positive character qualities such as confidence, dependability, self-esteem, responsibility, stamina, courage, cooperation, self-discipline, and self-reliance. We treasure our rich musical heritage and believe that benefits resulting from a commitment such as is required of Christ Church choristers are both far-reaching and long-lasting.
