Christmas Oratorio | J. S. Bach
Christ Church Chorale with the Michigan Bach Collective

Johann Sebastian Bach conceived the six parts of his Christmas Oratorio to be performed on the first six days of Christmas. As we celebrate the season this year, we will perform four of the six parts in one evening only. Depicting the birth of Jesus, the annunciation to the shepherds, the adoration of the shepherds, and the adoration of the Magi, Bach’s exquisite writing will lift your spirits from the opening chorus to the final chorale. This performance will feature the Christ Church Chorale with the Michigan Bach Collective, the region’s new period instrument orchestra.

Tickets $25

St. John Passion | Bob Chilcott
Christ Church Choirs with Orchestra

For nearly two millenia, Christians have been telling the story of Jesus’ arrest, death, and resurrection. Using the words of the Gospel of Saint John, living British composer Bob Chilcott (formerly a member of The King’s Singers) sets the narrative in a new and exciting way. As with Bach’s great Passion settings, the role of the Evangelist is taken by the tenor soloist, the words of Jesus and Pilate are performed by solo baritones, and the chorus becomes a crowd or a group of soldiers, commenting on the story in short outbursts. The audience is invited to join in as we sing well-known hymn texts set to new, original melodies.

The Creation | Franz Joseph Haydn
Christ Church Chorale with Orchestra

Considered to be his masterpiece, Franz Joseph Haydn’s oratorio The Creation celebrates the creation of the world as described in the Book of Genesis. Composed in three parts, the first begins with the Representation of Chaos and continues with the creation of light, heaven and earth, sun and moon, land, water, and plants. The second part depicts the creation of animals and man and woman. The third celebrates the happiness of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Join the Christ Church Chorale, Soloists, and Orchestra in this joyful celebration of our created world.

The service of Evensong (or sung Evening Prayer) is drawn almost entirely from the Bible: Psalms, lessons from the Old and New Testaments, and Canticles (songs of praise from the Scriptures). Music is an integral part of this service, and the choirs offer sung prayers to God on behalf of the people of God.
