The Reverend Drew Van Culin


Fr. Van Culin was installed as the 10th Rector of Christ Church on May 14, 2013.  Prior to coming to Christ Church Grosse Pointe, Fr. Drew served as Sub-Dean at the Cathedral Church of Saint John in the Wilderness, a large, urban parish in the heart of Denver, Colorado. At Saint John's he oversaw the corporate life and operation of the Cathedral, working with and directing a staff of 18 to fulfill the mission of the cathedral church.  In addition to his principal role as Sub-Dean,  Father Drew shared the responsibilities of daily prayer, pastoral care, worship development and leadership, preaching, and teaching as a member of the Cathedral Chapter. 

Prior to his ministry at Saint John's, Father Drew served ministries in Hawai`i, Colorado, and Florida.  Following his ordination in 1999, Fr. Drew began his ordained ministry working with three Episcopal Churches on the Big Island to develop the West Hawai`i Youth Ministry.  He then became Priest-in-Charge and Rector of Saint David of the Hills in Woodland Park, Colorado.  During this period, Fr. Drew also served as a Chaplain at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  In 2005, Father Van Culin was called to serve as the Associate for Christian Formation at Bethesda-by-the-Sea, a large, vibrant parish in Palm Beach, Florida.  

Born and raised in Kailua, Hawaii, and the son and nephew of Episcopal priests, Father Drew earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classical Humanities at Davidson College, N.C. in 1995, and a Master of Divinity from the Episcopal Divinity School, Cambridge, Mass. in 1999. He was ordained as a deacon in the Episcopal Diocese of Hawai`i in 1999 and as a priest in 2000. In 2003, he married his wife, Jessica, who is a nurse. Together they have two young children and a wonderful "poi dog," Maggie.
